Etihad Flight Delayed or Cancelled? Claim Up to £520 Compensation

Does UK261/EU261 cover Etihad?

Only in one direction. UK261 and EU261 protection applies to Etihad flights departing a UK or EU airport, for example Manchester or Heathrow to Abu Dhabi. It does not apply to flights arriving into the UK or EU from Abu Dhabi, since Etihad is a UAE carrier and the return leg falls outside UK/EU jurisdiction. Check which direction your disrupted flight was flying before you claim.

Any Etihad route out of the UK to Abu Dhabi is long haul, so a genuinely qualifying delay or cancellation typically falls into the top band.

Don't let a loyalty sign-up count as consent to a voucher

In January 2025, the Court of Justice of the EU ruled against Etihad in a case called Flightright v Etihad Airways. The airline had argued that a passenger setting up an Etihad Guest loyalty account to receive promised miles was equivalent to signed agreement to accept travel vouchers instead of a cash refund. The court rejected that outright, ruling that EU261 requires "express, definitive and unequivocal" consent before an airline can substitute vouchers for cash. If Etihad offers you Etihad Guest miles or a voucher after a cancellation, that is not the same as your legal entitlement to a cash refund, and simply engaging with a loyalty offer does not sign that entitlement away.

Regional disruption and IT outages

Etihad's Abu Dhabi hub has faced airspace closures tied to regional conflict during 2026, which have forced cancellations and rebookings on some routes. Genuine airspace closures ordered by authorities can count as extraordinary circumstances, but the airline still carries the burden of proving that was the actual cause of your specific flight's disruption, not just citing regional instability in general terms.
