How to Check If Your Flight Qualifies for Compensation

Not sure if your delayed or cancelled flight is eligible for compensation? Here's a quick checklist to find out before you claim.

Before spending time on a claim, it helps to quickly check whether your flight actually qualifies. Here's the checklist.

1. Did you arrive 3+ hours late, or was your flight cancelled or overbooked?

Delays under 3 hours generally don't qualify, regardless of the cause.

2. Does the route fall under UK261?

  • Departing a UK airport on any airline, or
  • Arriving in the UK on a UK or EU airline

3. Was it within the time limit?

6 years for England, Wales and Northern Ireland; 5 years for Scotland.

4. Was the cause genuinely extraordinary?

Technical faults, staff shortages, and routine operational issues don't count. Severe weather, ATC strikes, and security incidents usually do.

Still not sure?
