Iberia Delay Compensation: What UK Passengers Can Claim

Iberia flight delayed or cancelled via Madrid? Find out how much compensation you're owed under UK261 and EU261, and why the operating airline matters.

Iberia is Spain's flag carrier and part of the same group as British Airways. UK passengers use it heavily for Madrid city breaks and, more often, as a connecting hub to Latin America. Because Iberia is an EU airline, your protection is unusually strong: you're covered in both directions.

When you're covered

  • Departing a UK airport on Iberia, such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester or Edinburgh to Madrid: covered by UK261, paid in pounds
  • Departing Madrid or any EU airport back to the UK: covered by EU261, paid in euros, because Iberia is an EU-registered carrier
  • Long-haul legs out of Madrid to destinations like Bogota, Buenos Aires, Mexico City or Lima: covered by EU261 as an EU departure

This two-way coverage is the key difference between Iberia and non-EU carriers, where the return leg into the UK is often excluded entirely.

Check who actually operated the flight

A large share of Iberia-numbered flights are flown by other airlines in the group. Iberia Express handles many short-haul routes, Air Nostrum operates as Iberia Regional on smaller routes, and BA and Iberia codeshare extensively on UK to Spain services. Compensation is always owed by the operating carrier, not the airline whose code is on your ticket. Check your boarding pass for the airline that actually flew the aircraft, as claiming against the wrong one is a common reason for a rejection.

How much can you claim?

  • £220 or €250 for flights under 1,500km delayed 3+ hours
  • £350 or €400 for flights 1,500-3,500km delayed 3+ hours
  • £520 or €600 for flights over 3,500km delayed 4+ hours

UK to Madrid is roughly 1,250km, so most direct services fall in the lowest band. If Madrid was only a connection on a single booking and you reached your final destination in Latin America 4+ hours late, the distance is measured from your UK departure to that final destination, which usually puts you in the £520 band.

Missed connections through Madrid

Madrid is a busy transfer hub and tight connections go wrong regularly. If your first leg from the UK arrived late and you missed an onward Iberia flight booked on the same reservation, the whole journey is treated as one flight. What matters is your arrival time at the final destination, not how long the first leg was delayed.

Strikes and extraordinary circumstances

Iberia can refuse compensation where the cause was genuinely outside its control, such as severe weather, air traffic control restrictions or a security incident. Strikes by Iberia's own staff or handling agents are generally treated as within the airline's control and still qualify. Technical faults and crew scheduling problems are not valid exemptions, and the burden of proving the reason sits with the airline.

How far back can you claim?

You have 6 years to bring a claim in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 5 years in Scotland. Older Iberia disruptions from previous holidays are often still well within the window.
