TAP Air Portugal Delay Compensation: What UK Passengers Can Claim

TAP flight to Lisbon, Porto or Faro delayed or cancelled? Find out why most UK routes pay £350, how Lisbon connections are treated, and how to claim.

TAP Air Portugal is Portugal's flag carrier and one of the busiest airlines on UK to Iberia routes, flying from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh to Lisbon and Porto, plus seasonal services to Faro, Madeira and the Azores. It is also a major connecting hub for Brazil and West Africa. Because TAP is an EU airline, your protection is stronger than most passengers realise: you are covered in both directions.

When you're covered

  • Departing a UK airport on TAP, such as Heathrow or Manchester to Lisbon or Porto: covered by UK261, paid in pounds
  • Departing Lisbon, Porto, Faro or any EU airport back to the UK: covered by EU261, paid in euros, because TAP is an EU-registered carrier
  • Long-haul legs out of Lisbon to destinations such as Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife or Luanda: covered by EU261 as an EU departure

That two-way cover is the key difference between TAP and non-EU carriers, where the inbound flight to the UK is usually excluded altogether.

Most UK routes sit in the middle band

  • £220 or €250 for flights under 1,500km delayed 3+ hours
  • £350 or €400 for flights 1,500-3,500km delayed 3+ hours
  • £520 or €600 for flights over 3,500km delayed 4+ hours

London to Lisbon is roughly 1,585km, which is just over the 1,500km threshold. That single detail matters: it pushes almost every UK to Portugal route into the £350 band rather than the lowest one. Manchester to Lisbon, London to Faro, and services to Funchal and Ponta Delgada are all comfortably in the same middle band. If Lisbon was only a connection on one booking and you reached a Brazilian destination 4+ hours late, distance is measured from your UK departure to that final destination, which normally means £520 per passenger.

Check whether TAP Express operated your flight

Many TAP-numbered regional and short-haul services are flown by Portugalia Airlines under the TAP Express brand, and TAP codeshares widely with other Star Alliance carriers. Compensation is owed by the operating carrier, not the airline whose code is on your ticket. Check your boarding pass for the airline that actually flew the aircraft, because claiming against the wrong entity is one of the most common reasons a valid claim gets rejected on a technicality.

Missed connections through Lisbon

Lisbon is a compact hub with tight transfer windows, and a modest delay on the inbound leg from the UK can easily cost you an onward long-haul departure. If both legs were on the same booking, the journey counts as one flight for compensation purposes. What matters is how late you finally arrived at your destination, not how long the first leg ran over.

Strikes and extraordinary circumstances

TAP has a long history of industrial action involving its own cabin crew, pilots and ground handling staff. This is worth knowing, because strikes by an airline's own employees are generally treated as within its control and still qualify for compensation. Only genuinely external causes let the airline off, such as severe weather, air traffic control restrictions or a security incident. Technical faults, crew scheduling problems and knock-on delays from a late incoming aircraft are not valid exemptions, and the burden of proving the reason sits with TAP.

Atlantic weather on Madeira and Azores routes

Funchal in particular is known for wind shear and go-arounds, and diversions to Porto Santo or Las Palmas do happen. Genuinely unsafe conditions can be a valid defence, but airlines often stretch a weather label to cover delays that were really about aircraft rotation or crew hours. If your Madeira or Azores flight was blamed on weather while other carriers operated normally that day, the rejection is worth challenging.

How far back can you claim?

You have 6 years to bring a claim in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 5 years in Scotland, so TAP disruptions from earlier holidays or business trips are often still well inside the window.
