Wizz Air Compensation: How to Claim From the UK's Worst-Rated Airline
Wizz Air has been ranked worst for passenger rights compliance. If your flight was delayed or cancelled, here is how to actually get the compensation you are owed.
Wizz Air has repeatedly been ranked the worst airline for passenger rights compliance by Which?, and has been subject to enforcement action by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. If your Wizz Air flight was delayed 3+ hours or cancelled, you may be legally owed up to £520, but getting Wizz Air to actually pay is where most passengers give up.
What you're entitled to
- £220 for flights under 1,500km
- £350 for flights between 1,500km and 3,500km (covers most Wizz Air routes from the UK to Central and Eastern Europe)
- £520 for flights over 3,500km delayed 4+ hours
Why Wizz Air claims get rejected
Passengers frequently report rejection letters from Wizz Air containing inaccurate or misleading legal arguments: blaming weather that other airlines flew through, citing "operational reasons" as if they were extraordinary circumstances, or simply not responding at all.
Important: a rejection from Wizz Air is not the end of your claim. In 2022 the CAA took enforcement action against Wizz Air over its handling of passenger claims, and the airline was forced to reopen and pay thousands of previously rejected claims. A first-round rejection often just means they hoped you'd go away.
What doesn't count as an excuse
- Routine technical faults with the aircraft
- Crew shortages or scheduling problems
- The aircraft arriving late from a previous rotation
- "Operational reasons" without further evidence
How to make Wizz Air pay
- Submit a claim through their website and keep a record of everything.
- If rejected or ignored for 8 weeks, escalate. Wizz Air is a member of Aviation ADR, an independent dispute resolution scheme whose decisions are binding on the airline.
- Or skip the fight entirely. Klaimly handles the claim, the rejection, and the escalation for a flat 5% fee, only if we win. Persistence is most of the battle with Wizz Air, and that's exactly what we do.
How far back can you claim?
Up to 6 years for flights departing UK airports. Given how many valid Wizz Air claims were wrongly rejected in past years, old rejections can be worth revisiting.
