Refund or rerouting, plus separate compensation
When American Airlines cancels, it must offer you a choice: a full refund of the unused ticket, or rerouting to your destination at the earliest opportunity or at a later date convenient to you. That obligation exists regardless of the reason for the cancellation. Fixed cash compensation on top of that is a separate right, and only applies if the cancellation wasn't caused by extraordinary circumstances and you weren't given enough advance notice.
The notice period that decides compensation
- 14 days or more notice: no fixed compensation, even if the cancellation was American's own fault
- 7-13 days notice: compensation is due unless the replacement flight arrives within 4 hours of your original time

What counts as extraordinary circumstances for American
Genuine air traffic control restrictions, severe weather, and security incidents can exempt American from paying fixed compensation. Aircraft technical faults, crew scheduling problems, and rotation issues caused by American's own previous delays generally do not count as extraordinary, even though they can feel just as unavoidable from a passenger's seat.
