Delayed on American Airlines Within the US? Why UK261 Won't Help You
A domestic American Airlines delay, or one departing the US back to the UK, isn't covered by UK261. Here's what protection actually exists instead.
UK261 only ever applies to a flight that either departs a UK airport, or departs elsewhere and is operated by a UK or EU airline arriving in the UK. American Airlines is a US carrier, so any American Airlines flight that departs the US, including the return leg of a trip that started in the UK, falls entirely outside UK261, no matter how long the delay runs or how badly the cancellation was handled.
The gap this creates
A common situation: your outbound Heathrow to Miami flight was fine, but the return leg from Miami was delayed eight hours. The outbound leg being covered by UK261 doesn't extend any protection to the return leg, since that flight departed the US on a US carrier. These are assessed completely independently.
What actually protects you on a US-departing American Airlines flight
The US has no equivalent to UK261's fixed cash compensation for delays. The Department of Transportation instead requires airlines to publish and honor their own customer service commitments for controllable cancellations and lengthy tarmac delays, typically covering meals, hotel accommodation, and rebooking, but not a set cash payment per passenger. American Airlines publishes its own commitments, and what you're owed depends on reading those directly rather than a fixed statutory table.
Check American's own customer commitment first
Before assuming you have no recourse, check American Airlines' published Customer Service Plan for what it promises for delays and cancellations within its control. It typically covers rebooking on the next available American flight at no extra cost, and meal or hotel vouchers for lengthy controllable delays, though enforcement relies on the airline's own goodwill rather than a legal cash entitlement.
Don't assume the whole trip is uncovered
If your itinerary includes any leg that departs the UK or the EU, that specific leg can still qualify for UK261 or EU261 compensation on its own merits, even if a separate leg on the same trip, departing the US, does not. Check each leg of a return or multi-city American Airlines booking separately rather than writing off the whole trip.
