British Airways Cancelled Your Flight? Refund and Compensation Are Two Separate Payments
A cancelled BA flight entitles you to a refund or reroute AND separate cash compensation of up to £520. Here's how the two work together and why claiming only one leaves money unclaimed.
When British Airways cancels a flight, most passengers stop as soon as they have been refunded or rebooked and assume that is the end of it. It is not. A cancellation triggers two separate entitlements under UK261, and BA's Manage My Booking system is generally efficient at handling the first one while staying quiet about the second.
Entitlement one: refund or rerouting, your choice
When BA cancels, you choose between a full cash refund of the unused ticket, or rerouting to your destination at the earliest opportunity, or at a later date that suits you, at no extra cost. BA cannot substitute Avios points or a voucher for this without your agreement, and cannot force a reroute on you if you would rather have your money back.
Entitlement two: fixed cash compensation, on top
Separately, if BA cancelled with less than 14 days' notice before departure, you are generally also owed fixed compensation, unless the cancellation falls under a genuine extraordinary circumstance or you were rerouted close enough to your original timing that the rules exempt it. The amount depends on distance:
- £220 for flights under 1,500km (e.g. London to Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin)
- £350 for flights between 1,500km and 3,500km (e.g. London to Athens, Istanbul, Marrakech)
- £520 for flights over 3,500km (e.g. London to New York, Dubai, Singapore)
This is a fixed cash sum, not a proportion of your ticket price, and it is owed regardless of whether you took the refund or the reroute.
When British Airways doesn't owe compensation for a cancellation
- You were told at least 14 days before departure
- You were told 7 to 13 days before and rerouted to depart no more than 2 hours earlier and arrive no more than 4 hours later than planned
- You were told less than 7 days before and rerouted to depart no more than 1 hour earlier and arrive no more than 2 hours later than planned
- The cancellation was genuinely caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond BA's control
Outside these narrow exceptions, the notice-period rule is what decides it, not how the cancellation was communicated or how the app phrased the apology.
Connecting flights through Heathrow
If your booking was a single itinerary connecting through Heathrow and the cancelled leg broke your connection, the claim is assessed on your full journey to your final destination, not just the cancelled sector. Rerouting obligations extend to getting you all the way to where you were actually going, and the distance band for compensation is calculated on the whole itinerary.
What if you were left waiting for a rebooked flight?
You are still entitled to care while you wait: meals, refreshments, a way to make calls or get online, and a hotel with transfers if an overnight stay is needed. If BA did not arrange this and you paid for it yourself, keep every receipt. Those costs are claimable on top of the compensation.
How far back can you claim?
Up to 6 years in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and 5 years in Scotland, for a qualifying British Airways cancellation.
How to claim
Klaimly checks the exact notice period and rerouting details on your cancelled BA flight to confirm compensation is owed on top of whatever refund you already took, then handles the claim end to end for a flat 5% fee, only if we win. No VAT, no minimum fee, and nothing to pay unless your claim succeeds.
