Jet2 Cancelled Your Flight? Refund and Compensation Are Two Separate Payments
If Jet2 cancels your flight or package holiday flight, you can be owed a refund or new flight AND up to £520 compensation per passenger. Here's how the two rights differ.
Jet2 flies millions of UK holidaymakers to the sun every year, many of them on Jet2holidays packages. When a Jet2 flight is cancelled, most passengers focus on getting rebooked or refunded. That's understandable, but it may be only half of what you're owed. A refund and compensation are two different rights, and you can be entitled to both.
Right 1: refund or rerouting
If your Jet2 flight is cancelled, for any reason, you must be offered a choice of:
- A full refund of the unused ticket
- Rerouting to your destination at the earliest opportunity
- Rerouting at a later date that suits you
This applies even when the cancellation was caused by bad weather or air traffic control restrictions.
Right 2: compensation
Separately, if you were told about the cancellation less than 14 days before departure, and it wasn't caused by extraordinary circumstances, you can also claim fixed compensation per passenger:
- £220 for flights under 1,500km
- £350 for flights between 1,500km and 3,500km (for example, Manchester to Tenerife, Antalya or Faro)
- £520 for flights over 3,500km
For a family of four flying to the Canaries, that could be £1,400. The amount can be reduced if Jet2 offered an alternative flight close to your original schedule. See our guide to cancellations with less than 14 days' notice for the timings.
Booked a Jet2holidays package?
If your flight was part of a package, the flight is still covered by UK261, and compensation is claimed from Jet2 as the operating airline. Your package holiday rights against the tour operator, such as a refund for the whole holiday if it can't go ahead, are separate. Read our guide to package holiday flight disruption.
Which causes don't count?
Jet2 doesn't have to pay compensation for genuinely extraordinary events like severe storms, air traffic control strikes or security threats. Technical faults, crew shortages and knock-on effects from earlier delays on the same aircraft normally do qualify. Our explainer on extraordinary circumstances goes into more detail.
Accepting a refund doesn't cancel your claim
Taking a refund or a new flight does not mean giving up compensation. Be careful about signing anything that describes a payment as "full and final settlement" of all claims, and don't accept a voucher in place of cash compensation unless you genuinely want one.
Care while you wait
If you choose rerouting and have to wait at the airport, Jet2 must provide meals and refreshments, and a hotel with transfers if you're stuck overnight. Keep receipts for anything you buy yourself. For delays rather than cancellations, see our Jet2 delay compensation guide.
How far back can you claim?
You have 6 years to claim in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 5 years in Scotland.
