Delayed or Lost Baggage: What You Can Claim (Montreal Convention)
Baggage delayed, damaged, or lost by an airline? This is covered by a different law than flight delays. Here's what you're entitled to.
Baggage problems are covered by a completely different set of rules than flight delay compensation. If your bag was delayed, damaged, or lost, this is governed by the Montreal Convention, not UK261.
What you can claim for baggage
- Delayed baggage: reasonable essential purchases (toiletries, a change of clothes) while you wait for your bag, with receipts
- Damaged baggage: repair or replacement cost, reported within 7 days of receiving the bag
- Lost baggage: compensation up to a set limit (currently around 1,300 Special Drawing Rights, roughly £1,300-£1,400), reported within 21 days
This is separate from flight delay compensation
If your flight was also delayed 3+ hours or cancelled, that's a separate UK261 claim against the airline, on top of any baggage claim under the Montreal Convention.
How to claim
Baggage claims are made directly with the airline, with your PIR (Property Irregularity Report) number and receipts. Klaimly currently focuses on flight delay and cancellation compensation; if your flight was also disrupted, start that claim with us alongside your separate baggage claim with the airline.
