Lufthansa Flight Delayed or Cancelled? Claim Up to £520

Lufthansa flight to or from the UK delayed 3+ hours or cancelled? As an EU airline, Lufthansa owes you compensation on both directions. Here is how to claim up to £520 per passenger.

Lufthansa is one of the biggest carriers connecting the UK to Europe and beyond, with regular flights from Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Glasgow through its Frankfurt and Munich hubs. If your Lufthansa flight was delayed by 3 hours or more, or cancelled at short notice, you may be owed a fixed sum per passenger. And because Lufthansa is an EU airline, your protection is broader than it is with many non-EU carriers.

How much can you claim from Lufthansa?

  • £220 / €250 for flights under 1,500km (e.g. many UK to Frankfurt or Munich hops)
  • £350 / €400 for flights between 1,500km and 3,500km
  • £520 / €600 for flights over 3,500km delayed 4+ hours (long-haul routes connecting through Frankfurt or Munich)

The amount is fixed by distance and delay, not by what you paid for your ticket. A cheap economy seat and a full-fare business seat on the same delayed flight are owed exactly the same.

Why direction of travel works in your favour with Lufthansa

This is where Lufthansa passengers are often better protected than they realise. UK261 covers any flight departing a UK airport, whatever airline operates it. It also covers flights arriving into the UK when they are operated by a UK or EU airline, and Lufthansa is an EU airline.

In plain terms:

  • UK to Frankfurt or Munich (outbound): covered. You can claim.
  • Frankfurt or Munich to the UK (return): also covered, because Lufthansa is an EU carrier flying into the UK.

So unlike a non-EU airline, a delay on your way home is just as claimable as one on the way out. Both legs of your trip are protected.

Watch out for connections through Frankfurt and Munich

Lufthansa's network is built around connecting flights, and this matters for your claim. If you booked a single ticket from, say, Manchester to Singapore via Frankfurt, your compensation is based on the total distance to your final destination and the delay in reaching it, not the individual legs. A short delay on the first leg that causes you to miss your connection and arrive 5 hours late at your final stop can still trigger the highest bracket.

What counts as a valid excuse, and what doesn't

Lufthansa, like every airline, sometimes claims extraordinary circumstances to avoid paying. The following are not valid excuses:

  • Routine technical or maintenance faults with the aircraft
  • Crew scheduling problems or staff shortages
  • The inbound aircraft arriving late from an earlier flight
  • A vague reference to "operational reasons" with no specific cause

Genuine extraordinary circumstances, such as severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, or a security alert, can excuse compensation. Lufthansa's German pilots and cabin crew have also seen strike action in recent years, and an airline's own staff strike is a grey area that is often still claimable, so it is always worth checking rather than assuming a rejection is correct.

How far back can you claim?

You can claim for eligible Lufthansa flights going back 6 years in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, or 5 years in Scotland. An old delay on a flight out of Heathrow or Edinburgh from years ago may still be worth checking.
